Grammar / Notes
- 〜から〜まで and durations 〜から〜まで marks the start and the end of a span (‘from … to …’). A duration counter such as 〜時間 or 〜週間 says how long something lasts. (“That person said, ‘It is from 7:30 to 9:00.’”)
- 〜と言います (say that) 〜と言います reports what someone says, and と marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in 「」 keeps the speaker’s original wording. (“That person said, ‘It is from 7:30 to 9:00.’”)
English
Hotel Breakfast
During the trip, I stayed at a mountain hotel.
The next morning, I went to the dining hall, but no one was there.
I asked the receptionist, “From what time is breakfast?”
That person said, “It is from 7:30 to 9:00.”
It was 7 o’clock, so I returned to my room.
And then, I read the newspaper and drank tea in my room until 7:30.
