Grammar / Notes

  • 〜と言いいます (say that) reports what someone says, and marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in keeps the speaker’s original wording. (“I said, ‘I left my lunch at home!’”)
  • 〜から (because) at the end of a clause gives the reason for what follows: ‘because A, B’. The reason clause comes first and may end in the polite form. (“Because I got hungry, I had no energy.”)

The Mountain Cafeteria and Lunch

Last month, I went to a mountain together with a friend.
Around 12 o’clock, I looked inside my bag, but there was no lunch.
I said, “I left my lunch at home!”
Because I got hungry, I had no energy.
Around 1 o’clock, we arrived at the mountain cafeteria and bought lunch.
The cafeteria’s food was warm and very delicious.
