Grammar / Notes

  • 〜が (but) between two clauses means ‘but’ and joins two contrasting ideas into one sentence. The first clause usually ends in the polite form. (“I am looking at the shelves, but it is not there.”)
  • 〜ています (in progress) attaches to the て-form and describes an action that is going on right now, like the English ‘-ing’ form. (“I am looking at the shelves, but it is not there.”)

The Cooking Book

I am now in a bookstore near the university.
Yesterday, I saw a good cooking book at Maria’s house, so I want to buy it too.
I am looking at the shelves, but it is not there.
I have a photo of that book on my smartphone.
I showed the photo to the shop staff and asked, “Do you have this book?”
The shop staff said, “Ah, that book is on the top shelf over there.”
