Grammar / Notes

  • Polite past (〜ました / 〜でした) The polite past describes an action or state in the past. For verbs, replace with ; for nouns and na-adjectives, replace with . (“On Monday morning, I placed a small flower on my desk at the office.”)
  • 〜が (but) between two clauses means ‘but’ and joins two contrasting ideas into one sentence. The first clause usually ends in the polite form. (“I gave it water, but the flower wasn’t healthy.”)
  • 〜がすきです / きらいです Noun + means ‘like’ and noun + ‘dislike’. The thing liked takes , because and are na-adjectives, not verbs. (“Tanaka-san next to me said, ‘That flower likes dark places, you know.’”)
  • て-form linking actions The て-form joins two actions in order: X、Y means ‘do X and then Y’. Only the last verb carries the tense and the politeness. (“On Friday the leaves turned green again, and I was very happy.”)
