Grammar / Notes
- 〜とき (when) 〜とき means ‘when …’ and sets the time of the main clause. It follows a plain-form verb or an i-adjective; a na-adjective takes なとき, and a noun takes のとき. 買い物をしているとき、外は雨が降ってきました。(“While I was shopping, it started raining outside.”)
- Sentence-final ね ね at the end of a sentence seeks agreement or shares a feeling with the listener, like ‘isn’t it?’ or ‘right?’. スーパーの人が「雨がやみましたね」と言いました。(“A person at the supermarket said, ‘The rain stopped, right?’”)

The White Umbrella
On Tuesday afternoon, I went shopping at the supermarket.
While I was shopping, it started raining outside.
Because I did not have an umbrella, I bought a white umbrella.
But when I went outside, it was not raining.
A person at the supermarket said, “The rain stopped, right?”
I felt a little disappointed, but I carried my white umbrella and walked home.
