Grammar / Notes

  • Linking adjectives (〜くて / 〜で) To describe something with two adjectives, an i-adjective drops and takes ( becomes ), and a na-adjective or noun takes ; only the last one carries . (“There was an umbrella of the same color there, but it was old and not mine.”)
  • 〜ています (in progress) attaches to the て-form and describes an action that is going on right now, like the English ‘-ing’ form. (“Since it was raining, I borrowed an umbrella from the library staff and went home.”)

English

Red Umbrella

On a November afternoon, I was at the town library.
After putting down my umbrella, I read a book in a quiet room.
But, when it was time to go home, my red umbrella was not there.
There was an umbrella of the same color there, but it was old and not mine.
I was very worried and asked the library staff, “Did someone take it?”
Since it was raining, I borrowed an umbrella from the library staff and went home.
