  • 〜だけ and counters after a noun or a counter means ‘only’. A counter such as , or gives a number of things and usually stands right before the verb. (“But there were only apples in the refrigerator.”)
  • 〜から (because) at the end of a clause gives the reason for what follows: ‘because A, B’. The reason clause comes first and may end in the polite form. (“There was no rice or meat, so I cut two apples and put them in the bento box.”)

English

The Apple Bento

On Monday morning at around seven, I made a bento in the kitchen.
But there were only apples in the refrigerator.
There was no rice or meat, so I cut two apples and put them in the bento box.
At lunchtime, Tanaka-san from the same company saw my bento and said, “Only apples?”
Then Tanaka-san gave me two rice balls.
I said, “Thank you very much,” and gave Tanaka-san some of my apples.
