Grammar / Notes

  • て-form linking actions The て-form joins two actions in order: X、Y means ‘do X and then Y’. Only the last verb carries the tense and the politeness. (“I answered ‘Yes’ and returned both books.”)
  • 〜と言いいます (say that) reports what someone says, and marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in keeps the speaker’s original wording. (“I said to the librarian, ‘Excuse me, this book too, please.’”)

English

The Book at the Library

On Wednesday afternoon, I went to the library to return a book.
But when I looked inside my bag, there was one more book.
I said to the librarian, “Excuse me, this book too, please.”
The kind librarian looked at that book.
And they asked, “Will you return this one too?”
I answered “Yes” and returned both books.
